BRISTOL 1904 ARTS was delighted to host a public performance event with the Bristol Male Voice Choir (BMVC) last Friday - so we had both '1904' members as well as non-members from the public attending.
Notwithstanding the full compliment of the choir was not on stage, they put on one hell of a show and unexpectedly for us there was a surprise double performance by the Accompanist Clair Hiles and Musical Director Jo Scullin, jointly playing on the Bechstein Grand Piano, as an additional treat. Just marvellous!
The show opened with the very up-beat "When the Saints Go Marching In". Overall, the music and songs performed covered a broad palette covering Choir classics, Sea Shanties, Musicals, Classical and Jazz and finishing off with the rousing "You'll Never Walk Alone".
The BMVC has been a stalwart in the musical life of Bristol for 54 years with its contribution to fund-raising for charities and with its high standards of performance singing. Tours and visits have taken the choir to the USA (Singing in the Carnegie Hall, New York), Canada (Singing in front of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II), France, Spain, Poland, Austria (Vienna Cathedral), Germany and also competing in the Cornwall International Male Choral Festival many times. They have sung in many Bristol venues, at weddings, anniversaries, Christmas and commemorative occasions, not only in English but also Welsh, German, and Italian.
