The Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Bristol Councillor Paul Goggin appreciates the Snappers’ work.
Second Annual Photographic Exhibition
26th April - 5th May 2024
The BRISTOL 1904 ARTS’ photographic special interest group, known as ‘The Snappers’, welcomed 532 visitors to their 2nd annual Photographic Exhibition. This ran in parallel with the BRISTOL 1904 ARTS’ 113th Annual Paintings Exhibition.
The photographic exhibition contained the work of twelve photographers and consisted of 76 printed photographs as well as a further 76 images displayed through a rolling slide show on two screens. The subject matters ranged from portraits, studio-arranged images; land and seascapes; wildlife; cityscapes, abstracts, documentary and similar.
Visitors showed interest in where many of the differing images had been taken; how much post-capture manipulation was used; what sorts of cameras and equipment were involved and some background information about the individual photographers.
There was also some lively debate as to whether photography should be considered an art form as well as, how the thorny issue of artificial intelligence is impacting photography.
Another hot topic was just how good the camera facility on smartphones is and how long it will be before the smartphone supersedes the DSLR. This is where DPIs came into the conversations, smartphones with their mere 72 DPI and the limitations this imposes when wanting to increase the size of a print.
Following the very positive and supportive range of comments made by so many of the exhibition’s visitors, the Snappers are already thinking ahead to 2025 and their 3rd Annual Exhibition!
