Well, I don't know what madness comes over me this time of year but I feel compelled to dress up like this ... and even worse I got my wife, also a 1904 member, to do the same. (Top picture). 😄 But I suppose it's all part of the 'craic' on Irish Night!
And the Chairman elected for Irish Night, was longstanding member, Vince Watts who says his Irish credentials are that his mother came from Skibbereen in County Cork, Ireland.
Supporting Vince on the night was Eithne Noonan who performed an Irish Reel dance on the platform (stage), Vince's wife Mary Watts who recited a poem from WB Yeats and on the far right was Jeremy Watkins, one of our established Entertainer members, went on to perform some classic Irish songs with his powerful, baritone voice, including: "Trottin' to the Fair", "Danny Boy" and "The Star of the County Down".
As a note of interest: The words of Danny Boy were written by the great Edwardian lyricist and poet, Frederic Edward Weatherly - who was a member of our Society all that time ago. Interesting!!
Then we also had our Entertainer member Graham Smith play great Irish jig, reel and hornpipe tunes on his fiddle (oops sorry ... violin!) - accompanied by Mark Lee who was in the lead role as our Duty Pianist for the night.
And finally we had Scottish Accordionist, Ian Watt, play some Irish traditional songs and dance music to round off the evening!
What a night!!
