A talk and presentation on Typography and ancient books development.

Bristol 1904 Arts - Cultural Events group at a Pen-to-Print presentation

The leader of our 1904 Cultural Events & Excursions group, Dr. Paul Main invited a local expert, Gordon Young, to present his topic "From PEN to PRINT" to a group of interested members.  This took place at one of our art studios in our Red Lodge home.

The presentation and talk covered many aspects of typography and its place in an historical context.  He described the story of evolution from the scribe to the printed document and how some typefaces such as Roman and Italic won over against the Gothic typefaces which owe their derivation from the ancient church manuscripts.

The talk was made the more interesting with Gordon bringing many valuable books and document items to display and to illustrate the evolution and development of typographical techniques.

Gordon is a great presenter and you could see the passion and interest he had in the subject and how he was able to convey that to his audience.

Gordon, of course, is also well known to us in another capacity as being very involved in the several Cultural Event walks linked to the many Commemorative Plaques in the Clifton and Hotwells areas celebrating the lives of historical Artists, Scientists, Engineers and other historical figures.

Thank you Gordon !!
